Sarnano The stunning mediaeval town of Sarnano (see the photo gallery) is a short drive from Villa Borghetti or, if you’re feeling energetic, you could walk or cycle there using one of the local footpaths. Situated on a hill to the right of the Tennacola river, Sarnano is one of the few towns in Le Marche whose historic centre remains completely intact. The design is that of a ‘castrum’, a walled city with narrow streets unwinding in a spiral, intersected by a warren of tiny side streets. Thankfully, most of these are unsuitable for modern vehicles and a wonderful atmosphere of peace and tranquility pervades this magical place. At the top is the Piazza Alta, with the exquisite 13th century Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the imposing Palazzo del Popolo, which houses the Teatro Comunale della Vittoria. A little further down are the 14th century Church of San Francesco and the pinacoteca, housing art works of exceptional quality. The mediaeval town plays host to a variety of concerts, events and festivals throughout the year, notably the Mostra Mercato (antiques and crafts exhibition) which starts on the last Saturday of May and lasts for two weeks and the famous Palio del Serafino every August. Alongside the historic centre lies Sarnano’s lively modern town, with a good selection of shops and restaurants, an Olympic size swimming pool, thermal spa, tennis courts and cinema. For children (of all ages), there is an adventure playground called Bambinopoli. Sarnano key facts |
